SPALTED TWIN COFFEE TABLES
32" x 16" x 16" (each)
The figuring and color of the maple table top on these identical coffee tables is complex. It has curl, spalting, knots and grain running in all directions across the two inch thick top, like a maze. The color is equally varied, with the whites and yellows customary to maple, but also shades of pinks, purples, blues and greens. Seeing this wild beauty provoked mixed feelings for us - appreciation but also apprehension. How were we going to calm the wildness down to create a balanced piece? We decided to bookmatch the boards, providing a much needed symmetry and order to the grain. We also borrowed from George Nakashima's Minguren design for the table base, in a subdued walnut that contrasts with the light maple. This quiet, elegant base acts as the arbiter to the wild top. The table bookmatches edge to edge as well as side to side, allowing the client a choice between a narrow rectangular table and a square table.
